Philip Baumgarten is a seasoned double bassist, bass guitarist, and composer with a career spanning several decades in jazz and contemporary improvised music. His unique musical voice is deeply rooted in an international upbringing; born in New York and having lived in Switzerland, Italy, and Ghana, his compositions often reflect the polyphonic rhythms and vocal traditions he encountered during his formative years in West Africa.

As a bandleader, he fronted the acclaimed Philip Baumgarten Trio, a project known for its seamless blend of jazz standards and original works. His artistry has earned significant international recognition, most notably for the moving composition “Jeannette,” which became a “Track of the Day” on the prestigious portal AllAboutJazz.com. His studio work is equally distinguished; the duo album The Hurricane Sessions, recorded with American saxophonist Bob Anram, received a stellar 4.5-star review in the leading Dutch jazz magazine, Jazzism.

Beyond the stage, Philip is a meticulous producer and a dedicated educator. He has recorded and produced ten albums, often utilizing his signature studio techniques to capture the most authentic acoustic sound.
